Is a podcast simply an audio file?

Not at all. A podcast uses something called RSS technology that allows users to subscribe to a podcast page. This ensures each new episode is automatically download to your computer where it can be transferred to a portable media player such as an iPod for consumption at a time and place that suits the user. It is this subscription that makes podcasting such a valuable tool for users, giving updated, easy to access information with minimum effort.

Podcasts can even be delivered in the form of a video ( also known as a vodcast ) or as an enhanced podcast where images can be displayed at designated points in the audio file, allowing listeners to see related images, links to website pages or photographs that relate to the podcast subject.
